Move Aside Barbie – Pink is for Breast Cancer Research

Pink. It used to be the realm of girls and a few very fashionable men. Barbie wore it. We wore it from that palest of pinks to the hottest of hot pink, and we loved it–or most of us did.

We wore it on our shirts, pants, tiaras, and jackets. It was on our bicycles, fingernails, and coffee mugs when we got older. And then it was a symbol for something a whole lot more serious than Barbie.

Suddenly pink was synonymous with breast cancer. It began with Alexandra Penney, editor-in-chief of Self Magazine. The year was 1992, and she created a pink ribbon campaign, putting it on their second annual breast cancer awareness issue.

Then, Alexandra took it one step further—asking the big cosmetic companies to distribute them in their New York City stores. The pink ribbon that would forever be associated with breast cancer was born.

Pink Products in Support

It’s hard to find someone who hasn’t been touched by breast cancer in some way. It may be a family member or friend who has or is, fighting a battle against breast cancer. Maybe it’s you who is a breast cancer survivor. Perhaps it’s someone close to you who didn’t win the fight.

For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are showing our support for everyone in the fight, those supporting others, and those we have lost to an ugly disease.

We would love for you to purchase pink items to show your support for breast cancer, but even more important is your support for breast cancer research itself.

While advances have been made in detection and treatment, we have yet to find a cure, and the statistics are sobering. In the U.S., a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every two minutes, and experts estimate that 287,850 women and 2,710 men will receive this life-changing diagnosis this year.

If you are interested in finding a reputable, highly-ranked research effort to support, I would recommend the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). They currently have a 2X match for all donations, increasing the impact you make.

Dr. Larry Norton, the founder of BCRF, explains how they work. This is why, out of all the options available, I support them. He said, “The key to the success of the BCRF model is that it encourages innovation, non-competitive collaboration, unrestricted information sharing, and an overall attitude of goal-directed collective inquiry. We emphasize flexibility, cooperation, and intellectual risk-taking. The results have been remarkable, not only in achievements but also in spirit. And spirit drives progress as much as intelligence, knowledge, and dedication.”

Some Pink Suggestions

Here are some suggestions for pink items that we have available, and I am excited to tell you that I will be donating 5% from the sale of every pink item purchased during October to BCRF.

Keep in mind that while you can certainly use pink at Christmas, you could also purchase ahead for items you would use in February for Valentine’s Day.
